“Birthday” is part of the third edition of the “Festival of Contemporary Bulgarian and European Children’s and Youth Cinema,” which aims to promote feature films for children and young people produced in Bulgaria and Europe.
Grandma Genoveva has been bedridden for years, with no loved ones and her only wish being to die. It is precisely on her birthday that seventy-year-old Vasil—a “veteran” prisoner—is released from prison. His first step outside is a robbery—with the intention of returning to his only “family” in prison. While searching for valuables in Genoveva’s apartment, a sudden and unexpected encounter takes place between the two, leading to a strange deal: Vasil must kill her, and in return, she will bequeath everything she owns to him. Soon, however, unforeseen circumstances begin to delay the fulfillment of the agreement.
