Theophilus is a successful celebrity author whose fame, however, has faded considerably in recent times. Dreaming of moving away from his image as the author of saccharine romance novels, he writes a short poetic tale about a little sea snail that has lost its shell and is searching for the meaning of life.
Surprisingly, even to himself, Theophilus rediscovers his inspiration in the process, but he has no idea what effect this story will have on his loved ones. As if in a mirror, they begin to recognize themselves in the characters—sea urchins, shrimp, mermaids, and other sea creatures—and discover hidden messages in the metaphors.
That evening, everyone gathers to settle their scores. And a veritable cataclysm ensues. One after another, the family members pour out everything that weighs on them, lay bare their fears, and say everything that is on their minds, sparking a torrent of comical and surreal misunderstandings and miscommunications.
“Mirror, Mirror” by Leonor Confino is a witty contemporary comedy about the 21st-century individual living in an era of ever-increasing alienation, raising the fundamental question of whether we, as human beings, are capable of seeing the world as it is, or whether we see it solely through the reflection of who we ourselves are.
