Lilia Maravilia, Silvia Petkova, Emil Markov, and Ivan Barnev find themselves in a tumultuous “neighborly” relationship in the new comedy The Neighbors Upstairs. The adaptation of the hit Spanish film by Cesc Gay will debut on the Bulgarian theater stage through the directorial lens of Emil Markov. The show is produced by Artvent.
Ana and Julio have been together for years. Time and routine, however, have driven them apart, seemingly irrevocably. They don’t look at each other, they don’t touch, and conflicts between them have become the norm.
Until they move into a new apartment… An apartment where screams and moans are constantly heard from the floor above. Perhaps out of jealousy, perhaps out of envy and a longing for a more exciting life, but these sounds become the subject of constant arguments between Ana and Julio.
Without warning her husband, Ana invites the upstairs neighbors over so they can get to know each other and become friends. Julio insists on complaining to them about the noise, but Ana doesn’t want to bother them.
The evening turns into a comical clash between the sexual liberality of the upstairs neighbors and Julio and Ana’s “standard” way of interacting and living. The two face a serious test, as the upstairs neighbors turn their world upside down.
An emotional storm of mutual accusations erupts, bringing hidden grievances and repressed desires to the surface. Tonight, the neighbors will become both the instigators and the victims of an emotional tsunami triggered by an unusually bold and surprising proposal.
How to move on after such an “intense” evening—that is the question facing Ana and Julio!
