The play tells the story of a group of English tourists on a trip to Spain, where they encounter a strange local. He is Spanish and besides dancing passionately flamenco and passionately can hate and love turns out to be in love with a widow. However, she rebuffs all his more pushy advances and tricks him into believing that one of the group of tourists is her husband. The confusion becomes complete when the Spaniard goes to each of the Englishmen with a passionate plea for his wife’s hand. It is clear that by “wife” each means “his own,” and at one point the Spaniard finds himself amidst a forest of hands-and with the thought that he is fighting only for that of the true widow. The madness is complete, as is suggested, and beyond the laughs is some serious thinking about family, human relationships, truth and lies between two people who claim to love each other…
